In February, 2013, Director of the School International Department Zheng Yan contacted me about summer camp in Linyi No 1 Middle School. Since then, both of us spent a lot of time on making this happen. The Summer Camp finally opened on July 11, 2013 and lasted for 10 days.
There were totally 34 students enrolled in the Summer Camp. They were from Linyi No 1 Middle School, Linyi No 6 Middle School, Linyi No 9 Middle School, and also from other schools in Yizhou, Shangcheng, and Feixian.Vice principal Wang Enlai oversaw the program from the beginning to the end. Two Chinese teachers, Lin Jia and Li Yunji, managed daily administrative tasks taking care of students room and board. Teacher Lin also drove for us between school and Linyi Hotel every day. Aside from me, there were three English teachers selected by Ibasedzone.com conducted daily teaching duties. Trent S. is from Florida, USA; Andrew W. is from California, USA; Jacob I. is a native of Australia, and currently a college student in Beijing. The high attention from both sides made the Summer Camp a huge success. Interestingly enough, Director Zheng Yan led a group of Chinese students leaving for America on the second day of the Camp. The world is vast but also becomes very small.
The enrolled students were divided into two classes. One was for high school students and the other was for middle school students. Jacob taught high school students. Trent and Andrew taught middle school students. There were three periods each day, 3 hours in the morning, 3 in the afternoon, and 2 hours after dinner. The class schedules were very intensive. I found that Chinese students are very dedicated and eager to learn. Three English teachers introduced American classroom teaching style, using a lot of interactive activities to make the teaching material interesting to students. High concentration and active participation made every day pass quickly. The classrooms were full of laughter and music. Here is a piece of article wrote by student Candy. The topic was “My Restaurant”. She wrote “I have a big restaurant. It is very clean. My restaurant has an easy name. The name is Happy Every day, because I want everybody to be happy every day!”
In the evening, we watched American movies. The students understood most part of the movies. They really enjoyed the Disney movie “Mulan”. The ancient Chinese story was made into an American movie and watched by Chinese and American alike, how interesting! Sometimes students were singing English songs together. Jacob is a really good guitar player and girls like him a lot.
The last day suddenly arrived. We gathered in a classroom. We sang a song called “Hey, I just met you, this is crazy”. After that, everyone received the graduation certificate. Mr. Wang said: “Happy time is always short. The 10-day class has put a full tank of gas into you dream boat, you will sail to the other side for success.” Trent made a movie about the Summer Camp. The happy time appeared in front of us once more. Andrew sincerely invited everyone to visit us in America or Australia in the future.
The plane was slowly ascending above Linyi City. We looked down below and the beautiful school campus was getting away from us. Teardrops were in my eyes. Goodbye, dear school colleagues and dear students, we really had a good time. Thank you.
